This scene is so delicate. And they were incredibly stunning in it.

They so clearly adore each other so much. It’s “as plain as the nose on your face.”

SO beautiful.

They both just light up when they see each other.  So much love.

Top left, bottom right…*sigh*

Favorite Matthew Crawley Moments Per-episode: episode 7 (series 1)
-“Do you love me enough to spend your life with me?”

You can hear his voice almost breaking, because this love means so much to him! *__*  There are things Mary isn’t able to explain to Matthew and that makes him so confused! Poor darling!

The thing that has ALWAYS killed me in this scene is Matthew’s “You were sure”. Because there’s no doubt in his mind - that implies to me Mary had given him a definite indication she’d been going to accept, she’d let him know she WAS sure of her answer… and then for poor Matthew, the only thing that’s changed is his prospects, and all of a sudden she isn’t sure any more.

Kind of related, his question is never “Do you love me?”, but “Do you love me enough” - which again, just makes it THAT much more painful. He knows she loves him, he knows it. Just… not enough. And that’s almost worse. :(

Except that she knows that she loves him a lot, but she can’t tell him why she’s not giving an answer because she thinks that he’d hate her forever.  The poor things. :(

#one face to outface them all

You know, the more I look at that, the more I believe that her hair is just tucked under that hat.  Not done properly.  I don’t think she rang for Anna.  I don’t think she took the car.  I think she walked.

Totally agree. She got up and dressed herself and the servants saw her as she was leaving the house, as they were going about their early morning tasks. His train was at 6am and I’m guessing the Crawleys didn’t rise until at least 8am. I’m sure she could have rung for Anna but I don’t think she did.

She needed to see him.  No pretense was necessary; she just needed to send him off and do what she could to protect him.  This, like her prayer for his safety, her careful nursing of him, and her support of Lavinia, shows her strengh and her desire and her true priorities.
She didn’t care about the proper thing or the expected thing.  She cared about seeing Matthew one last time.

“You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone for ever. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when you almost broke it(…). Dare not say that a man forgets sooner than woman, that his love has an earlier death. I have loved none but you. Unjust I may have been, weak and resentful I have been, but never inconstant.”
